Untouched Original French Directoire Figured Walnut Buffet w/Stone Top

Every once in a great moon, we are fortunate enough to come across a truly exceptional piece of furniture, and this all original 200 +/- year old French Directoire figured walnut buffet is no exception. Complimented with its uniquely colored marble top, it is as good as it gets. What is even more amazing, is the fact that it only required a few coats of carefully applied beeswax before being moved on to our showroom floor. This buffet has lived a very sheltered life to be in this great condition, surviving the past 200 years so exquisitely. Notice the heart shaped brass escutcheon on the right drawer, and the large diamond motif on the center panel so indicative of the Directoire period. The style is so clean that it blends effortlessly with everything from mid-century modern, to original 18th century antiques. An ingeniously hidden center drawer is an excellent compliment to this already compelling antique. As they say in the car business, "they are only all original once" and when they find one it is dubbed "a survivor". Well folks, that's what we have here, an all original, totally unmolested or restored survivor. This buffet is a true masterpiece, not only is it breathtaking to look at but, it functions as it did day one. Difficult enough to find in an automobile, and they only go back about 100 years, let alone a fine piece of furniture that dates back every bit of 200 and possibly a few more. Directoire best describes the period of style in decorative arts, fashion, and especially furniture design, concurrent with the post-Revolution French, 1795-1799. The style is distinct supplementing neoclassical architectural forms, and minimalistic carvings. The Directoire style was primarily established by the renowned architects and established designers Charles Percier (1764–1838), and Pier François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853).
