Vintage Swedish Walnut and Burl Buffet with Glass Vitrine, 1940s
About the Item
This cupboard was manufactured in Sweden during the 1940s. It is finished in walnut burl wood. A burl (or burr) is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty and rarity. It is sought after by furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors. These are highly valued and sliced into veneers for furniture, luxury household objects, automobile interior paneling and trim, expensive musical instruments and woodturning. This buffet has a drawers, close lockers, shelves and vitrine in the centre part. The panes are made from milk glass with geometric pattern. The piece has original brass handles and brass feet.

- Oak Buffet with 2 Doors and 3 Drawers by René Gabriel, 1940sBy Rene GabrielLocated in PARIS, FROak buffet with 2 Doors and 3 Drawers by René Gabriel, 1940s René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements.
