17th Century Ebony Ivory Italian Travel Cabinet

About the Item

Beautiful 17th century travel cabinet made in marquetry of ivory and ebony. This piece was made in Italy, probably in north of the country, in Lombardy. It has 7 drawers and a central architectural niche. The drawers have an ivory background and ebony ornamentation forming foliage scrolls. On the sides and on the top is ebony veneer with encrustings of bands of ivory. It is in good general condition. The back of the bottom central drawer is half broken (last picture). The key of the niche is still present but the latch cannot be closed anymore. This mobile piece of furniture was used to keep valuables, luxury papers, curios, medals, precious stones and other objects. It was originally placed on a table. The luxurious materials used to make the cabinet and the richness of the decoration honored to its contents. Initially small in size like this one, the cabinet then evolved into a structure with two superimposed units. This type of furniture was used since the 16th century and its golden age was in the 17th century.

Condition:

Repaired: As it is very old, repairs have been made to preserve its condition. Replacements made: It is possible that the front of the central bottom drawer have been remade later, but i have no reel proof of it. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses.
