18C Mexican/Texan Bargueno Style Chest on Stand

About the Item

PRESENTING A STUNNING AND IMPORTANT piece of North American, Texan, HISTORIC furniture, namely, an 18C Mexican/Texan Bargueno Style Chest on Stand. This is one of the MOST INTRUIGING pieces we have seen in years! Made of pine, maple and walnut this piece’s design is based upon the ‘classic’ Spanish Bargueno (Vargueno) Chest style. It consists of a chest made of pine, maple and walnut on a solid pine stand. The top section, namely the ‘Bargueno Section’, sits neatly, onto the rectangular pine base and lifts off, making it 2 pieces. The chest has 2 decorated doors to the front, that are Gothic in style with various panels. The 2 front doors open outwards to reveal a very plain interior set of pine drawers, in various sizes, with walnut knobs. 11 drawers in total, with one larger square one in the center. On each side of the chest there are two wrought iron (unmistakably 18th Century) handles, for carrying the top section of the piece. The lock is also unmistakably 18th Century and appears to be very similar to ‘Spanish locks’ of the day. The hinges are later replacements (most likely, late 20th Century judging by the screws). The two lever latches on the interior of the left door are, more likely, early 20th Century, circa 1910. Some minor restorations, namely, to the hardware as stated above and the walnut buttons, on the front doors, are more recent replacements for the original buttons that were originally on the piece, but a number had been lost. The pine base or stand, has a heavily carved front board (in the Spanish style of carving) and has all the signs of genuine ageing. It is constructed with wooden pegs and the leg supports show signs of hundreds of years of rubbing and wear. Also, the wood in parts exhibits signs of petrification which one would expect to see with a REALLY OLD piece of pine furniture. WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT THIS PIECE WAS NOT MADE IN SPAIN, BUT IN COLONIAL SPANISH AMERICA. WE ALSO BELIEVE THAT IT COULD EVEN POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN MADE IN TEXAS, DURING THE SPANISH OCCUPATION. The reasons for our conclusion are: (1) the materials used are not those that one would expect to see on Spanish pieces. Mostly, they used oak and the Bargueno’s tended to be highly decorative on the interior when the doors were open. They often were heavily inlaid with bone and ivory. This is replicated in early Mexican pieces (2) this one has a much more rustic or provincial feel to it and the woods used are the one’s that would have been available here in Texas or further West. (3) there is a very ‘Hacienda Ranch’ type feel and look to this piece. With the piece being found here in Texas and being in the ownership of an avid Private Collector since the early 20th Century, we think there is a reasonably good chance, that this is a Texas piece and not further West, like New Mexico. From the construction and hardware we date this piece to circa 1750-90. If we are correct …… this dates this piece to prior to Texas Independence etc. thereby making it HUGELY IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY RARE! Provenance: From a Private Dallas Collection. • 18th Century George II Miniature Campaign Bureau Chest on Later Chest Stand
    Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING A GORGEOUS and beautifully proportioned Mid-18th Century George II Miniature Campaign Bureau Chest on later Chest/Stand. Mid-18th century, made in Britain, circa 1760-1770. The bureau chest sits on a later stand/chest, that we estimate is late 19th century, circa 1860-1880. It is also British. We believe that the primary wood in this piece is either Elm or Sycamore with mahogany elements. Classic Campaign style miniature Bureau Chest, with its ORIGINAL George II brass hardware, including handles on the sides for easy carriage, which is what proves to us, that this chest was made for campaign purposes. The brasses are GORGEOUS and are classically George II in style, design and construction. The quality, thickness and patina to the brasses, is what ‘initially’ tells us, that this is a ‘period’ piece and not a reproduction. Likewise, the dovetailing detail to the drawers, tells us that this was a hand crafted piece and certainly NOT machine made. The secondary woods appear to be a combination of oak and pine, exactly as one would expect. The central keyhole escutcheons are FANTASTIC and are in the form of a pair of opposing ‘lyres’. We have never seen anything like them! Beautiful natural patina! The ‘brasses’ look like they have been polished a ‘little too often and vigorously’, over the piece’s 250+ years history … BUT … the bonus of this cleaning is the creation of a rather appealing, '2 Tone effect’, on the patina of the wood around the brasses. The Bureau has a flat gallery...

  • 18C English Chippendale Shepherds Crook Armchair
    Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting an absolutely stunning and original 18C english chippendale shepherds crook armchair. Made in England circa 1780-1800 of walnut, this ‘period’ chair is simply Gorgeous in it’s Originality! It is still covered in it’s original needlepoint/tapestry upholstery with neo-classical elements of a Greek or Roman Goddess sitting holding a staff on the back splat and floral motiff’s elsewhere. What makes this piece Truly Original is the fact that the needlepoint appears to have been signed by the original owner/maker of the tapestry and it appears to be the family name of “Tancret”. The arm rests have the most glorious ‘shepherd’s crook’ twists and turns. The central base section has what appears to be heavily carved Prince of Wales Plumes, signifying the Regency Era. The knees of the 2 front legs have the most amazingly carved acanthus relief decoration and the 2 front legs end in the best example of ball and claw feet you are ever likely to see. The back legs also have some interesting detail as the feet are platformed or hooved. Overall, the piece is in great condition for it’s age and use. There are no major tears or holes in the original tapestry. There is some discoloration but that is to be expected with a piece this old. There is a very small piece of the central front medallion (bottom left as you look) missing, but it is not noticeable and does not detract from the piece. One small stain on the back. Gorgeous natural patina to the wood. Provenance: From a Wealthy Estate in Kentucky/Tennessee Condition: Very good. See full description. Dimensions: 44? tall, 28? wide and 27? deep Seat height of 18.5? with seat depth of 17.5? and interior seat width of 22.5? Armrests are 26.25? Tall The vast movement of people that followed the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 brought the Tancret family name to the British Isles. Tancret comes from the ancient Norman given name Tancred. The Tanksley variant is indeed rare. However, this name traces its origin to Roger Tankerlayman who was listed in Yorkshire in 1387. Because of this political and religious unrest within English society, many people decided to immigrate to the colonies. Families left for Ireland, North America, and Australia in enormous numbers, traveling at high cost in extremely inhospitable conditions. The New World in particular was a desirable destination, but the long voyage caused many to arrive sick and starving. Those who made it, though, were welcomed by opportunities far greater than they had known at home in England. Many of these families went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants...
