About the Item

18th century cabinet stamped AVRIL in rosewood and white marble top Elegant piece of furniture with a curved front in rosewood and white marble top. Stamp of the AVRIL workshop and stamp of the corporation the "JME", Jurande des Maîtres Ebénistes, under the marble. Etienne Avril became a master cabinetmaker in 1774. His younger brother Pierre, a free worker, took over the workshop at the time of the French Revolution. Furniture of the 18th century, Louis XVI style and period. Dimensions of the furniture (Height/Width/Depth) : 109 x 92,5 x 41 cm Artist exhibited at the Château de Fontainebleau, the Musée Marmottan in Paris and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon. Shape : Furniture with a curved front and curved sides mounted on four tapered legs, three-quarter engaged rounded uprights with simulated flutes. Openings : A drawer in the upper part, a flap locker and two drawers with concealed rail. Ornamentation : Openwork brass gallery surrounding the marble top. Gilded bronze trim: Corner scrolls simulating branches and quivers in medallion, keyholes decorated with knots and ring pull handles, simple clogs on the feet. Marble : White marble top. Marquetry : Rosewood and wood veneer in leaves in a frame of nets. >> AVRIL Etienne (1774) Called Avril the elder not to confuse him with his brother Pierre, Etienne Avril opened his main store on rue de Charenton, at the corner of rue Moreau, but also a few stores near the Porte Saint-Antoine. He was solicited for numerous orders, including Queen Marie-Antoinette for her apartment in the Château de Saint-Cloud. The furniture of the Avril workshop is characterized by simple lines and large plain surfaces, typical of the Louis XVI style. Most often in mahogany and satinwood, but also in Indian wood, lemon veneer, amaranth and rosewood. The workshop has a few models in geometric marquetry. The forms are light and well proportioned, the discreet bronzes, almost absent, are visible only at the entrances of locks and sometimes in the form of fine baguettes of framing which underline the lines and the architecture of the piece of furniture. During his activity as a cabinetmaker, Etienne Avril produced chests of drawers, consoles, bookcases, secretaries, bedside tables or even chiffonniers... Although less frequent, he also made some support furniture and mahogany tric trac tables. At the dawn of the Revolution, Etienne Avril gave up his store in the rue de Charenton to keep only the stores at the Porte Saint-Antoine. After his death in 1791, it was necessary to organize several auctions, each lasting several days, in order to sell the countless number of accumulated goods.
