19th Century French Henri ii Carved Oak Jelly Cabinet with Fruit Decor

About the Item

Decorate an entry or office with this elegant antique jelly cabinet. Crafted in France, circa 1870, the "Confiturier" (French for jelly cabinet) stands on bun feet over a molded plinth base it features barley twist columns on both sides, a single door decorated with hand carved fruit motifs in high relief; the inside reveals a middle shelf. The small buffet has a drawer embellished with carved foliage decor under a rectangular top decorated with molded lunette edge. The Louis XIII style cabinet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina. Measures: 38.25" W x 19.25" D x 39.5" H

    19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door.
