About the Item

This is a fantastic antique Art Deco 'The Miramar' cocktail cabinet with maker's plaque for Rivington, London, EC2, circa 1930. Rivington designed and manufactured many beautiful items in the first half of the 20th century. The cocktail cabinet is of beautiful blonde oak, it is bow front outline, the upper section with ribbed doors encloses a beautiful mirrored interior, with a glass shelf. The inside of each door has a galleried shelf for mixers and small bottles and glasses.There is an internal light which comes on when the door is opened and this has been rewired so it now works perfectly. There is a pull out mirrored slide below this for serving drinks on. The twin doors below open to reveal a cupboard for storing the bottles of drinks and it stands on an ebonised plynth base. With working locks and keys. There is no mistaking the timeless appeal of this highly collectable item.This cocktail bar w ould be a wonderful addition to your lounge and is sure to get noticed wherever it is placed. It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Ageimagery and materials. The style is often characterized by rich colours, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. Deco emerged from the Interwar period when rapid industrialization was transforming culture. One of its major attributes is an embrace of technology. This distinguishes Deco from the organic motifs favored by its predecessor Art Nouveau. Historian Bevis Hillier defined Art Deco as "an assertively modern style...[that] ran to symmetry rather than asymmetry, and to the rectilinear rather than the curvilinear; it responded to the demands of the machine and of new material...[and] the requirements of mass production". During its heyday Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. Oak is a tree or shrub in the genus Quercus - Latin "oak tree" having approximately 600 extant species. Oak wood has a density of about 0.75 g/cm3, great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. It also has very appealing grain markings, particularly when quartersawn. Oak wood is very durable, easy to maintain and resistant to wear and tear which is why it can be easily handed to the next generations if taken well care of. Oak wood virtually lasts forever and you can still admire oak furniture in museums and palaces even if it was made many centuries ago. Oak has been prized since the Middle Ages for use in interior panelling of prestigious buildings such as the debating chamber of the House of Commons in London and in the construction of fine furniture.
