Cabinet with Table, Tortoiseshell, Bronze, Etc, Italy, 17th Century and Later

About the Item

Bargueño. Tortoise, bronze, wood, iron. Italy, 17th century; rear table. Uncovered sample desk made of wood and finished in tortoiseshell that has a division into three areas at the front. The sides have four drawers each (each with two veined forms in tortoiseshell enhanced with a metal band flanking each lock shield), golden details with vegetal elements and Solomonic columns at the outer ends on a base and topped by curved and straight architectural elements. The central part, called the chapel, is presented in advance and has an outstanding architectural composition with Solomonic columns and gilt bronze elements. The furniture is topped by a band pierced under architectural elements and it is located on legs holding spheres. The buffet or washbasin table that supports it and stands out, from a later date, has turned legs joined by means of a chambrane and two wrought iron fasteners. The general scheme of the furniture responds to some models known and used in cabinetmaking throughout Europe throughout the seventeenth century of which the best examples are considered to be of Italian origin, such as the present one. Thus, its decorative elements belong to the same tradition: the legs carved in the shape of a synthesized bird's claw on a ball are very typical of the time; the sides are flatter and simpler (geometric marquetry); etc. However, the present example stands out from the usual in its contemporaries due to the architectural elements of the front and the galloned pieces of the drawers already mentioned, which are totally different from what can be found in the bins of this type linked to Antwerp. Compare this example with the one kept in the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuary Arts (Valencia), which does not present the elements of the drawers already mentioned. Size: Bargueño 146 x 50 x 100 cms Mesa 153 x 52 x 85 cms. Table was made at a later date.

  • Reliquary Altar. Wood, Glass, Metal, Etc. Spain, 17th Century
    Located in Madrid, ES
Wall reliquary altar. Carved, polychrome and gilded wood, glass, metal, etc. Spanish school, 17th century. Reliquary altar made of carved, gilded and polychrome wood composed of a part that imitates a curtain of the type usually used to cover altars and other pieces when they are not used, topped by a winged angel head, and a composition organized around a tondo large central stem, from which arise a series of stems ending in scrolls. Some of these stems (eight in total) eventually form a kind of crown of leaves in the center of which are as many circular reliquaries of saints. In this mentioned central tondo there is an Agnus Dei (or Ágnusdei) made of wax. On the visible side there is an image of the Risen Christ (inspired by the one sculpted by Michelangelo Buonarroti around 1520 and found in Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome) accompanied by angels with symbols of the Passion and on a pedestal. This image is known to have been used on these pieces before 1598, again in 1619, and again in 1690. These relics (they are blessed by the Pope) get their name because they are printed on the front, above the book with the seven seals , the haloed Paschal Lamb carrying the banner of the Resurrection. In the text around the image, it seems to include a reference to Pope Pius V...
