'Checkometry' Cabinet. Metal inlaid with gesso.
About the Item
A mid to late Twentieth Century cabinet that has been reconditioned and reimagined by designer and maker Kate Noakes. Kate uses a unique process that she has developed of cutting her original designs in sheet metal that are applied onto existing furniture and then inlaid with gesso. A form of modern marquetry that creates a durable, functional and dynamic veneer that transforms the furniture back to a new and vibrant life.
The 'Shards' design works well on any shape of furniture - each time it is used the scale of the design is adapted to suit the dimensions of the piece. The colour of the gesso can be customised.
Due to the nature of Kate’s work this chest of drawers is an example of past work, and is a guide of what can be commissioned. This design can be applied to any style of furniture. Kate will liaise with you to source a piece that suits your requirements, any of her designs can then be applied. This piece is in two sections.

Kate Noakes
Kate Noakes has worked with metal since falling in love with it as a material while studying for a BA (Hon) in Fine Art. It has been the driving force behind her career, first as a sculptor and lecturer and now as a designer and maker of furniture. Initially inspired by the work of Andre Charles Boulle, “furniture jeweller” at the court of Louis X1V, Kate has developed a process of applying her original designs cut in sheet metal onto existing furniture which are then inlaid with gesso. A form of modern marquetry that creates a durable, functional and dynamic veneer that transforms furniture back to a new and vibrant life. Kate’s furniture sits comfortably in both contemporary and traditional settings.
Since launching her first collection at the London Design Festival in 2012, Kate has worked extensively with private clients and interior designers to source the original furniture and then to transform it into unique statement pieces. She has work in public and private collections in the UK and USA. Due to the nature of Kate’s work most of the furniture listed here are examples of past work, it is a guide of what can be commissioned. Kate will liaise with you to source a piece that suits your requirements, any of her designs can then be applied. The colour of the gesso can also be customised
This design can be applied to any shape or style of furniture. The colour of the metal is always silver but the colour of the gesso can be customised.
