Danish Cabinetmaker "Funkis" Cabinet / Shelving Unit in Dark Stained Oak, 1930s

About the Item

Charming cabinet made in Denmark in 1930 by an unknown cabinetmaker. The cabinets exterior is made of dark patinated oak and the interior in warm pinewood. The style is typical for the Danish adaptation of the functionalist Bauhaus-style, that was dominant in the 1930s. In Denmark it was nicknamed "Funkis" and was seen in both buildings and interior from the period. Danish "funkis" furniture is characterized by geometric shapes and clarity of form. No unnecessary decoration and focus on function. Functionalism is the style-historical term for a development in architecture that arose after the First World War and characterized the interwar period. The Danish functionalists can roughly be divided into two groups: Architects who sought to imitate the foreign models, especially Le Corbusier's white, cubic houses and to a large extent broke with traditional Danish building practices, and architects who sought to combine functionalism with Danish materials and craft traditions.
