French Napoleon III Ormolu & Porcelain Mounted Cabinet Meuble D'Appui by Befort
About the Item
A Very Fine French Napoleon III Figural Ormolu and Porcelain (Probably Sevres) Mounted Tulipwood Meuble A Hauteur D'Appui, by Mathieu Befort, dit Befort Jeune. The rectangular shaped body fitted with a white marble top on with a reticulated frieze of scrolling grapevine and clusters interspersed with doves and centering paired squirrels. The front hinged door trimmed in acanthus cast encadrements enclosing central bleu celeste oval porcelain plaque of a ribbon-tied floral basket within a border of parcel gilt blossoming foliage and framed by cherubic enfants frolicking amongst flowering branches. On each corner, similarly decorated plaques flanked by Bacchanalian corner figures on a serpentine plinth mounted with a lion mask issuing scrolling fruiting foliage centered by square block panels with marguerite detailed mounts. The ormolu stamped "BEFORT". Circa: Paris, 1870.
The firm of Befort specialized in 'furniture in the style of Boulle and in the use of bronze and hardstone' (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le mobilier français du XIXe siècle, Paris, 1965, p. 29) and received a medal at the 1844 Exposition des produits de l'industrie français. Befort Jeune was recorded at Neuves-Saint-Gilles from 1844 until 1880.
