About the Item

Late 19th century Signed by Guillaume Grohe (1808-1885). Guillaume Grohé (1804-1885) was a renowned Parisian cabinetmaker and one of the principal furniture-makers of his era. Born in Germany, Guillaume and Jean-Michel moved to Paris to pursue a dream of developing a furniture business. In 1827 they formed the firm Grohé Frères, which they worked for from 1829-1881. Owing to the exceptional quality of the fine furniture that the firm produced, Grohé Frères became official suppliers to members of the European aristocracy and royalty including Emperor Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie. Similarly, the French duc d’Aumale commissioned most of the furniture for the Chateau de Chantilly from the brothers.
