About the Item

Important counter with trimpe Indo-Portuguese 17th Century of two bodies in ebony and sissoo. Note: This important Indian counter was acquired in Soutelo do Douro, near S. João da Pesqueira, having belonged to the House of "Sampaios" of the family of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio, 6th Governor of India, from 1526 to 1529, in the reign of of D. João III. It is to be presumed that this wonderful piece was offered by him to his father and brought by António Tenreiro in 1527 on a trip he made to Portugal, by land, crossing deserts and visiting unknown cities. The aforementioned notes were taken from the Livro dos Vice Teis da Índia, by José F.Ferreira Martins.
