Laurie Wiid van Heerden and Lionel Smit, "Lineage" Hand-Painted Cork Cabinet

About

Cape Town designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden designed this large cork and steel cabinet with doors featuring painted panels by internationally renowned South African artist Lionel Smit. The one-off collectible piece weighs close to 600 kg and dismantles into three parts for easy transport and installation. "Lineage" speaks of the Western Cape of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage with its gabled top referencing traditional Cape Dutch architecture still prevalent in historic homesteads in the Cape Winelands as well as a double portrait of a Cape Malay woman painted by Smit on the aluminium doors . Van Heerden is the founder of Wiid Design, a Cape Town-based design studio, that creates collectible furniture and products at the interface between art and design. By combining handcrafting and specialist techniques, Wiid transforms materials into life-enriching and durable objet d’art with cork being a popular feature. Van Heerden has exhibited at international design fairs such as 100% Design in London, Design Days Dubai, Design Miami/ Basel and Design Miami. He received the Maker to Market Award at the annual Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards ceremony in 2013, the Conde Nast House & Garden Award for Production Excellence in South African Design at 100% Design South Africa, 2014 and the Best Lighting Design Award at 100% Design 2015. Lionel Smit creates monumental portraiture works on canvas, sculpture, silkscreen, video and public installations. His work has been exhibited locally and internationally in prestigious galleries, art fairs and public spaces. These include a solo exhibition at the Didrichsen Art Museum, Helsinki and various public sculptures of his being featured in the USA including Union Square, New York City. Smit’s painting, "Kholiswa", received the Viewer’s Choice Award as part of the BP Portrait Award 2013 at the National Portrait Gallery in London. He has been a featured artist at the Miami Art Fair 2014 and on the cover of Christie’s catalogue in London 2009. Recent exhibitions include "Faces of Identity", a solo exhibition with Everard Read in London and "Premise", a solo exhibition with Everard Read in Cape Town. In recent years, Smit has been honoured with a Ministerial Award from the South African Department of Culture for Visual Art. Over the past 10 years he has established a substantial international following with collectors ranging from the Standard Chartered Bank to Laurence Graff Art Collection at Delaire Graff Wine Estate.

About The Maker

Southern Guild

View Profile
Southern Guild has spearheaded the high-end design category in Africa, propelling its artist-designers to make spirited, challenging and complex work. Its highly curated exhibitions have redefined global perceptions of African design and escalated its value on the international market. Since being founded in 2008 as the sole gallery representing locally made limited-edition design, Southern Guild has birthed a new category for artists and designers in South Africa. In 2011 it became the first African gallery to present at Design Miami, and in 2015 it was the first to be featured at Christie’s London’s annual design auction. The gallery shows regularly at Design Miami in Basel and the US, at Design Days Dubai and the Collective Design Fair in New York, resulting in sales to leading architects, top collectors and respected museums. It has had work from its collections included in Vitra Design Museum’s “Making Africa” exhibition and “Beauty–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial” at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Against the backdrop of a design industry that is still fairly young, Southern Guild gives designers a platform to reimagine what is possible. Founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan are embedded in the South African cultural landscape and play integral roles in guiding, advising and mentoring designers.
