Oaxaqueño Bargueño inspired by 16th C Spanish-style furniture w/ drawers & doors

About the Item

Oaxaqueño Bargueño inspired by 16th century Spanish-style furniture, which in turn was influenced by German and Italian craftsmen. At that time, the Moorish artisans, who made this type of work in Spain, were expelled from the country. The Spanish, who had received great wealth from the colonies, began to undertake important projects that required skilled labor. Running out of Moorish artisans, they were forced to bring in German and Italian craftsmen. These techniques were learned by the monks, who passed them on to the Mexican artisans. Hence the result of this bargueño, which has drawers and doors for storage, and is typically placed on a base.
