Pair of Mid-Century Sideboards
About the Item
A pair of ash and hessian sideboards, the sliding doors opening with leather handles.
Spain, 1970s
145 cm wide by 80 cm high by 42 cm deep
Provenance: Former headquarters of the publishing house Gustavo Gili, building designed in 1953, by architects Joaquim Gili (1916-1984) and Francesc Bassó, one of the best examples of Rationalist architecture in Barcelona. Built between 1954 and 1960, it was awarded the FAD Prize for Architecture in 1961.
The Editorial Gustavo Gili head office reflects the main ideas of Rationalist architecture: the use of new materials, elimination of superfluous decoration, submission of form to function, consistency with the surroundings and making use of natural light. The architects had been trained in the theories of GATCPAC, a group of progressive Catalan architects, and they were enthusiastic supporters of the new architecture as opposed to out-of-date classicism.
