About the Item

Peter Opsvik, pair of handcrafted cabinets, maple, paint, Norway, 1998 The Norwegian designer Peter Opsvik is omnipresent to most people due to his revolutionary design of the “Tripp Trapp”, a chair for children that is adjustable to them growing in size. Next to his multiple innovative chair designs, the “Tripp Trapp” is only one example out of many. Opsvik also created decorative objects like these oval cabinets that have more a sculptural than a functional appearance. These particular pieces were designed within a limited edition and are engraved with the numbers 1/20 as well as signed by the artist. The exceptional character of the cabinets is evoked due to the half round maple body that is allowing to place two cabinets towards each other to form a round, free-standing cabinet or to be placed next to each other towards a wall. A double door in shape of two abstract human silhouettes facing each other is what makes this cabinet more a piece of art than an item with functional storage. The natural maple rests on a black base. The doors are highlighted by their hand painted mint and white color which separates the two bodies visually. A small opening is used to access the inside with shelves. Peter Opsvik (1939-) is mostly known for his innovative, ergonomic chair designs. The Norwegian designer first success was the children’s chair “Tripp Trapp” (1972) that allows adjustment with the growing height of the child and is still part of most children’s childhood today. But also Opsvik ergonomic office chairs bring a lot of people through their daily work life. Besides his furniture designs and his thoughts on how to rethink movement and humans their daily space, Opsvik also designed decorative objects mostly in wood.
