Rare 17th Century Baroque Ebony with Silver Cabinet, Antwerp, Wunderkammer

About the Item

Antwerp Mid 17th century An Antwerp ebony, silver foil, gilded bronze, and with a mirror: jewelry cabinet. With a secret compartment in the slide top. The cabinet is inlaid with fine engraved silver plaques. On the front lid is the Biblical story of Joseph explaining the dreams in prison and late before the Pharao. The front is decorated with fine friezes of floral ornaments and birds. On the top lid are two plaques, one with a Roman? general and the other with Saint George and the Dragon in beautiful Renaissance cartouches. We sold this cabinet 6 years ago but due to the unfortunate passing away of the owner, it is now back with us. We acquired the cabinet from a Dutch private collection. The collector did not know of the secret compartment and when opening the compartment together we found a small box with two four-leaved clovers. They are in the box for many years and will stay inside. Literature: Zuid-Nederlandse Pronkmeubels, Ria Fabri, 1989. Condition: Two small damages to the silver on the front lid, and one small damage to the face of the general on the top lid. The ribbon that holds the top lid is loose. With a few small damages to the woodwork according to age. Please see the provided pictures.
