About the Item

The ray cabinet in ebony and bronze is created to be a notable accent piece. It is at once rich, luxurious and complicated, while maintaining a serious and serene form. Gabon ebony is a member of the diospyros family and comes from northern Africa. It is a historic wood and has been used for thousands of years in the finest made furniture and interiors. In fact, the French term for furniture maker, "Ebeniste," derives from their one time specialization and use of this wood. To make parts from this very precious and rare material requires extreme skill and knowledge. We source quarter logs or cants of solid ebony and re-saw them in our studio into a special thickness veneer that is stabile and suitable for use in furniture--a process that was used by masters of a bygone era, honors the tradition of furniture making and brings it into the future. When you think of this veneer, you shouldn't think of cheap paper thin commercial veneer on plywood, think of the surfaces that were used to cover the finest royal furniture for hundreds of years, handmade, special. Once the Gabon Ebony veneer has been created, we apply it to special substrates using proprietary techniques and adhesives and polish and finish it to the highest standards using the finest modern methods and materials for a finish that will be timeless and stand beautifully for years to come. This ebony top is carefully configured to form geometric patterns, the grain being changed directionally to create a pleasing mosaic. The rich inky-black top is not stained, but is naturally dense in its color, letting through traces of rich brown here and there. This grain will naturally vary from cabinet to cabinet. It is polished to a sleek, natural hardness and sheen, gently coated with a clear lacquer finish to protect the surface from fingerprints and tarnishing. The bronze detail in the tabletop is inlaid between the geometric patterns and is carefully pieced and jointed at its vertices, polished by hand to a satin finish. The iron base is carefully machined and welded and holds the ebony and bronze cube like a jewel in a setting. The interior of this cabinet is five drawers and can be used as a silver cabinet, jewelry case or to hold other valuables or collectibles. The doors of the cabinet open by means of a hidden magnetic latch to maintain a seamless exterior and an enigma in access.
