About the Item

Jean Servais Somian (B. 1971. Ivory Coast) is a visual artist based in Paris & Abidjan. His works mostly include design, sculpting and cabinetmaking. Jean Servais Somian followed his first training at the artisanal centre in Grand-Bassam in Ivory Coast. He then attended a design agency in Lausanne, Switzerland where he gained additional training in furniture and layout. Somian now mainly works with coconut tree wood, appointed as his preferred material. His creations have been exhibited in numerous places such as Cologne, Aachen, Paris, Alger and Dakar. In 2013, the artist has been awarded with the Archibat prize for the launch of the design exhibition called AbijaNow happening in Abijan. The reputation of his artwork is increasing all over Africa, and especially at home, in Ivory Coast. Now on top of his game, Jean-Servais Somian creates series of experimental sculptural furniture-- the Demoiselles de Bassanam-- in which each piece is worked on differently: he carves into the wood, sometimes hollowing it entirely, scrapes it or add elements to it, leaves it naked, waxes or paints it -sometimes in very vivid color- always negotiating his intervention with the curve given it by the random physical situation of where the tree used to stand. The result is functional pieces that serve as shelving or cabinets or pure sculptures that stand awesomely and slightly supernaturally as high as 250cm. Les Demoiselles de Grand-Bassanam have a powerful presence and being around them is to rejoice in the strength and beauty of the natural material only partially tamed by the human hand.
