The concept of Djivan Schapira’s Solar Sailer Collection marries visual motifs of retro futurism and the high-end French decorative arts techniques (marquetry, lacquer) learned from his father. His subsequent mastery over the process of mixing and pouring resins has expanded the potential of contemporary design. The possibilities for combinations, arrangements, and colors of the resin are endless, rendering each piece completely unique. A love letter to the space race era of design, Schapira has incorporated more modern references – the production art of Tron, Daft Punk’s visionary costumes, the Bauhaus revival of the 1970s – into a physical and functional embodiment of galactic ambition. The Solar sailer bar candy is emblematic of Schapira’s affinity for atomic design. Its rounded linear form suggests propulsion while the large resin disk slides across the open, mirror backed shelving, further telegraphing the concept of movement and sailing through time. The cabinet’s body, fully coated in high gloss resin in harmony with the cast resin elements, references the sleek polished finish of automobile design. In an unexpected turn of playfulness, the interiors of the three lower cabinet doors are each painted in a unique color or “flavor.” While the candy-like palette gives the cabinet its evocative name, the versatility of Schapira’s materials allow for a wide spectrum of visual impact from quiet to loud.
