About the Item
George III Coromandel Lacquer Commode with Later Top & Later Handles. Sourced by repute by Albert Hadley from Mallet.
A handsome English commode from the Late 18th Century made in Coromandel lacquer technique. In the Coromandel lacquer technique a layer, several millimeters thick, of chalk mixed with clay is applied to wooden panels, then covered again with a thin layer of black lacquer. The images are then carved into the chalk through the layer of lacquer. The effect creates a scene which stands out in relief. A black lacquer ground with scenes depicted in red, green, gold and blue colors. Serpentine front, three drawers. Top and hardware added later. Condition: Good overall condition for age and use. Some losses to finish throughout.
