18th Century Cherrywood Trumeau Commode, Josephinism Period, Austria circa 1780

About the Item

One of a kind 18th Century Cherrywood Trumeau Commode from the so-called "Josephinism" period, called after Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor in which he was the sole ruler of the famous Habsburg Monarchy for ten years (1780–1790). Artfully processed in Austria around 1790, this beautiful Trumeau impresses with its outstanding set herringbone veneer work and inlayed nutwood and ebonized fruitwood stripes. This extraordinary over 230 year old Trumeau commode from a manorial property, offers two doors and a drawer, which can only be opened when the doors are open. A classical hand-polished shellac finish preserves the marvellous veneered surfaces and perfectly accentuates the ornated pattern. The lovely, still original brass fittings finalize the unique look of this valuable masterpiece from the late 18th century.

  • Louis XIV Cherrywood Commode from France, Early 18th Century
    Located in Dallas, TX

One beautiful example is our period Louis XIV commode, which was hand-carved in France in the early 1700’s. Augmenting the lovely reddish-brown color of the commode is an arbalete top that slightly hangs over the three stacked drawers below. Each drawer has three bronze foliate fittings set inside geometric panels with recessed molding (two pierced foliate swag pulls flanking a small keyplate surrounded by a parted leaf). There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables. Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...
