18th century French Louis XVI gilt-bronze mounted Geometrical Marquetry commode
A Louis XVI gilt-bronze mounted geometrical marquetry commode or chest of drawers with a shaped moulded mottled grey marble top above two long drawers of break-front form inlaid sans traverse with two-tone-banding, a shaped apron set with a symmetrical gilt-bronze mount of foliage. On square tapering legs with gilt-bronze sabots.
Attributed to Jacob Jauffmann, a cabinet-maker who was born in Germany (Weingarten) and settled in Lyon, marrying and becoming a maitre ebeniste in the year of 1770. He mainly worked in the transition and Louis XVI style. Beside the attribution on stylistic grounds, an allocation to Lyon is also owed to the fact that the structural wood not oak but a softwood.
