About the Item

A charming and elegant pair of period Louis XVI (1774-1792) French chiffoniers. circa 1780 Exquisitely hand-crafted in France in the late 18th century, most likely Parisian work, high-quality solid wood construction finished in exotic kingwood, tulipwood, mahogany, and other exotic woods marquetry are parquetry-work. Having a tall narrow rectangular shaped case with distinctive canted corners, fitted with five dovetailed drawers affixed with pierced ribbon keyhole escutcheon mounts. The drawer facades adorned with intricate flower marquetry inlays framed by delicate cross-banding, flanked by traditional Neoclassical gilt bronze ormolu mounts, rising on tapered legs adorned in finely inlaid fillets, surmounted by the original Brèche d'Alep marble tops. The bronze mounts are stamped JR. Beautifully aged warm mellow heavily distressed patina over the whole, retaining original antique character marks and charm throughout. DIMENSIONS: (approx) 36.5" High, 18.75" Wide, 11.5" Deep; Drawer interior: 4"H, 13.5"W, 8.5"D Versatile, as warm and attractive as they are useful, having the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as bedside nightstands - commodes, chair side tables, tall end table, semainier lingerie chest of drawers, hall consoles / pier tables flanking a entry or window, and more! CONDITION REPORT: Good antique condition, especially considering its age. Strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound. Presents well, with heavily worn distressed warm mellow patina. Wear consistent with age and indicative of moderate use, including evidence of numerous oldrepairs/restorations over the last 240+ years. Past repair to rear corner of marble. Scattered losses, fill, flaws, age appropriate shrinkage and touchups throughout add to the overall authenticity, sophisticated antique character, and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time.
