19th Century, Italian Louis XV style Veneered Wood chest of drawers

About the Item

19th Century, Italian Louis XV style Veneered Wood chest of drawers This chest of drawers was made in Genoa in the second half of the nineteenth century, in the characteristic style of the Genoese Baroque era. The chest of drawers is made of veneered wood and the cabinetmaker has wisely used the typical grain and color of the wood to create decorative and chromatic effects of great elegance. The flap and drawers feature the "Genoese four-leaf clover", a well-known four-lobed rose window made of heart-shaped elements inlaid in bois de rose. This decorative element is so called because it resembles the petals of a four-leaf clover, and is characteristic of Ligurian cabinetmaking. The chest of drawers consists of two parts, one lower and one upper. The lower part has two large drawers with chiseled and gilded bronze handles. On the top it has an additional smaller drawer with lock and knobs in chiseled and gilded bronze. The upper part is instead composed of an opening compartment equipped with a small tilting door that, rotating on pins, can be lowered and raised according to the needs (secretaire). When it is open it provides a support surface and reveals five small drawers and as many open compartments, in which to store stationery and small personal items. The wavy, sinuous line, characteristic of the Baroque period, which accompanies both the front and the sides, to continue with the four legs, gives graceful and decorative overall. The chest of drawers, very versatile, is suitable to be placed in many environments, such as entrances, studios, living rooms, rooms and can be easily combined with both antique and modern furniture.

It consists of four drawers, of which two smaller upper. It has a wooden structure entirely lacquered in light ocre decorated with floral and foliate decorations and compositions of still life of fruit in shades of red. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks are in finely chiseled burnished bronze, typical of the Louis XV era. The molded top is in Rosso Francia marble, a marble from abroad that at the time was very precious and expensive. The dresser has the front and the sides moved by the move line, legs thin and slightly curved. The front legs are embellished with burnished bronze chiseled tips shaped like acanthus leaf. This piece of furniture is quite rare because of its small size that make it easy to fit into any environment.
