Antique 'Eastlake' Brooks Brothers Dresser in Walnut with Marble Top, U.S, 1890s

About the Item

A nice petite dresser by Brooks Brothers, NY; the oldest clothing retailer in the United States and a company that up until the early 20th century, manufactured all types of home goods and furnishings. Brooks Brothers was founded in 1818 in lower Manhattan, and had manufacturing facilities throughout the state of NY as the company expanded. This piece retains its original manufacturer's paper label to backside and remains in original condition. This dresser is completely handmade in walnut and cedar wood, in the Eastlake Style--a late 19th Century architectural movement that produced furniture celebrated for its lightness, practicality, joy in fabrication, and often lathe-turned as well as low relief carved decorations. It was a playful and pragmatic, expressive style that reacted to dark, heavy, exceedingly impractical Victorian furnishings of the mid 19th century. This particular dresser features a chamfered marble top, and decorative burl wood panels flanked by split-turned walnut bullseye half-rosettes. Some other nice elements of this piece are the campaign-style ebonized-wood and brass drawer pulls, chamfered and moulded posts with neoclassical motifs, decorative carvings throughout, and hand-cut dovetails. Nice rail and stile side panels complete the case, with the back left open to be closed by loosely joined ship-lapped cedar panels nailed in place to allow for movement, and easy and access for repairs/replacement. There are four castors under plinths at the base, three of the wheels in porcelain, and one is cast iron--presumably a later replacement. Overall a charming little chest of drawers with tons of character and utility to spare. Marble top allows the piece to function well within a kitchen and at 37" high, it makes for an excellent food prep table/ad hoc cupboard.
