Antique Empire Chest of Drawers in West Indies Mahogany with Mythological Scenes
About the Item
A very fine Empire commode in a light-colored Cuban/ West Indies mahogany with satinwood inlays featuring an upper drawer with small inlaid lidded compartments with original turned knobs. Line inlays continue throughout the plinth, with the top banded in ebonized trim. The top drawer is inlaid with a pair of opposing griffins whose tails sprout oak leaves. A mythological scene in the center arch of the middle drawer appears to be a depiction of Ariadne (daughter of King Minos of Crete) and Dionysus (or Bacchus: the god of wine, mirth and an itinerant wanderer). He is squeezing the juice from a bundle of grapes into her goblet. It could portray their first meeting at Naxos, upon awakening to the reality that she had been left behind by Theseus. Ariadne had saved Theseus from the Minotaur by providing him with an escape route out of the labyrinth. One version of the story tells of how Dionysus stumbled on the sleeping Ariadne on the beach and fell in love with her, and how they were subsequently married. Denmark, circa 1810.

- Condition:Repaired: minor restoration to replace or repair missing or damaged veneers done in the best of conservancy practices. Some of the drawer runners may have been rebuilt to allow drawers to operate smoothly French polished. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. This chest is in very good to excellent condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. Working locks on top two drawers, no lock on bottom drawer. Beautiful light mahogany with original turned knobs on the interior compartment covers.
