Bidermaier Austro-Hungarian Empire Chest of Drawers in Wood and Brass

About the Item

Splendid wooden chest of drawers from the Bidermaier period in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in around 1850. Biedermeier was an artistic and ornamental movement that developed in the historical period between 1815 and 1848. Very popular among the German and Austrian bourgeoisie, it is often referred to as the 'romantic' genre. The chest of drawers has four very beautiful brass support feet, which seems to have very sinuous wings and also seems to have three claws at the end, very beautiful indeed. At the front there are three large horizontal chests that cover the entire length of the chest. Each drawer has a brass lock in perfect patina, with a key attached, which opens all the locks. The shape is fairly rigid rectangular. The highlight is the wood, which is very light and fine. Its workmanship is marvellous: in fact, around the locks we see a rhombus framing them; connected to this rhombus are two thinner horizontal bands, with a different workmanship inlaid in the wood. The frame of the coffers also presents a different motif, all decorated with sinuous frets. The chest of drawers is something splendid as well as a great piece of history of a vanished empire.
