Commode by Roger Vandercruse, known as Lacroix (1727-99) Louis XV/XVI

About the Item

This form of commode or chest of drawers, with a 'breakfront' or projection section in the middle, was particularly favoured by the Parisian cabinet-maker Roger Vandercruse (1727-1799), although his was not the only workshop to produce them. A number of commodes stamped on the carcase with his 'R V L C' mark are known, and some are known to have been made for members of the court. But This Wonderful Commode with a rectangular marble top with a soft front shape on a Baroque Ornament design that hides three drawers on two long drawers covered with gilt bronze reserves with concave corners inserted with a patera, In the center, a real marquetry box with decoration of a lake that illustrates scenes of ancient ruins, and on the sides inlays of Diana and Minerva. It should be noted that in each piece of furniture these scenes are treated in a similar but not entirely identical way, with nuances and variations in the treatment of their decoration, the angles with laurel mounts with berries, the apron with the mask of Mercury crowned by curtains, snakes and books on a pedestal on cabriole legs cast with acanthus ending in legs, the bottom of the top stamped twice 'R V L C'. In overall very good conserved condition. The overall color is less orange with more contrast and the gold is more golden and attractive than in the photograph. The quality of the gilt bronze frames and the marquetry details is very good. This piece can be placed immediately. Highly recommended.
