French Commode Chest of Drawers Louis XVI 18th - Black Marble Marquetry - France

About the Item

Wonderful French chest of drawers from the Louis XVI period, 18th century, with a rectangular black marble top surmounting two drawers, each with two ring handles, resting on square conical legs with bronze shoes. Its facade is straight. This Lovely Little Sauteuse Commode is made of Walnut inlaid with different woods. The marquetry work is impressive and original with alternating light and dark wood veneer. The chest of drawers opens with 2 drawers on the front. Its Pull Handles and Lock Entrances are in Gilt Bronze. Due to its size and finesse, this chest of drawers fits wonderfully into all rooms, bedrooms, offices, entrances, galleries, hallways, landings, living rooms, etc. Magnificent woodwork from the 18th century, from Eastern France. The sauteuse chest of drawers appeared in the Regency style, between 1705 and 1730, and then became widespread in the Louis XV style. The sauteuse chest of drawers or “cressent chest of drawers” was invented around 1720 by the cabinetmaker Charles CRESSENT in the middle of the Regency style period. Wishing to stand out from the heavy and massive Louis XIV style, he created a tapered and graceful, almost airy shape. This important evolution in the history of styles foreshadows the advent of light and curvaceous furniture in the Louis XV style. It has only two drawers (or two rows of drawers). The body is raised on half-height legs, half of the height of the furniture having to be taken by the body, the other half by the feet. The observer thus has the impression that the piece of furniture has legs allowing it to jump like a frog. The facade is most often straight. The Louis XVI style was born in France and was exported throughout Europe and then the whole world. The antique and classic style greatly influenced Louis XVI style furniture and was one of its themes. The attraction for classicism is felt in the design of the furniture. The proportions and volumes are balanced, the elegance is sober and refined; The Petit Trianon, in the park of the Palace of Versailles, offered by King Louis XVI to the Queen Marie-Antoinette, is a good example of the Louis XVI style: its inspiration comes from Greek antiquity, its lines are clearly straight, but for all that, a certain lightness emanates from it. Louis XVI leaves numerous marks of his passage and his investment in the place at Versailles. Louis XVI period furniture is extremely elegant, geometric and of high quality.
