Georgian Caddy Top Bachelor's Chest

About the Item

Very fine George III mahogany caddy top bachelors chest attributed to Giles Grendey, having a bead molded top over brushing slide over two short and three long graduated drawers, all boasting original brass hardware, and standing on well formed bracket feet, the whole with good rich color and patination. A virtually identical chest was recently offered in the English trade which had two labels from the highly esteemed cabinet maker Giles Grendey. Grendey (1693-1780) was one of the best-known cabinet-makers of his time, due partly to the fact that he occasionally labelled his furniture (unlike most English cabinet-makers.) Based in Clerkenwell, London, he enjoyed enormous success as a cabinet and chair maker supplying furniture to many prominent houses, including Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire as well as Stourhead and Longford Castle in Wiltshire. A similar chest is pictured in Christopher Gilbert's "Pictoral History of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840"
