An Important Louis XV Kingwood Commode By Jacques Dubois

About the Item

An important Louis XV ormolu mounted kingwood marquetry bombe commode by Jacques Dubois (1693-1763), stamped under the marble. A fine quality early 18th century French marquetry commode, veneered in kingwood, Louis XV period, by Jacques Dubois (1694–1763, master craftsman 1742). The serpentine shaped brèche marble top above two short drawers and two long drawers. The shaped sides are decorated with gilt bronze mounts that extend from under the marble to the feet. Gilt bronze finely incised handles and escutcheons. Like Joseph Baumhauer, Pierre Migeon, and BVRB, Jacques Dubois (1693–1763) was one of the leading Parisian ébénistes during Louis XV’s reign. A descendant of a family of French ébénistes, he probably learned the craft in the workshop of his half-brother, Nöel Gérard, an important cabinetmaker and dealer of the 1720s and 1730s. He started working in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine neighbourhood at the start of his career, then achieved master’s status at a relatively late age, 49 (in 1742), after which he opened his own workshop opposite the Hôtel des Mousquetaires Noires on Rue de Charneton, where he remained for nearly twenty years. His known work illustrates the prosperity of the ébéniste who enjoyed special commercial relationships with some of the most important Parisian marchands merciers of the time. The inventory made after his death reveals a large workshop with a varied range of production including secrétaires, writing desks, pedestals, and clocks, decorated with floral marquetry or with Chinese or Japanese lacquer. While Dubois did not provide furniture for the French court, he did produce pieces for royalty such as Madame Elisabeth, Louis XV's daughter who married the Duke of Parma. Jacques Dubois pieces are amongst others in collections in The J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), The Louvre (Paris), and The Wallace Collection (London) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
