Italian 1790s Neoclassical Period Painted Commode with Pompeian Style Décor

About the Item

An Italian neoclassical period painted poplar four-drawer commode with hand-painted Pompeian style motifs and faux-marble top. Born in the later years of the 18th century, this exquisite Italian commode witnesses the impact the rediscovery of Pompeii had on the arts of the time. The commode features a rectangular planked marbleized top, sitting above four painted drawers. A central grisaille landscape scene is flanked by two wooden pulls, beautifully adorned with delicate painted foliage motifs. The harmonious repetition of motifs on each drawer is subtly contrasted by the variation of the landscape scenes in the middle. The side panels are decorated with Pompeii inspired arabesques surrounding a central medallion. Raised on four short tapering feet, the commode showcases a nicely aged patina reminding us of its age. With its clean lines and exquisite painted décor, this neoclassical Italian four-drawer commode circa 1790 will bring a graceful presence to any home, whether placed in a bedroom, living room or foyer. We have its certificate on file.
