Late 18th Century Dutch Neoclassical Mahogany Large Commode

About the Item

This unusually large three-drawer commode or chest of drawers is of Dutch origins and was made between 1780 and 1800. The simple yet dynamic form is enlivened with large moldings and applied carvings of wreaths, ribbons and bell flowers all stained in a dark rich brown with gilded highlights. The wood is mahogany selected with large flame patterns up the front creating a subtle wavy pattern while the tops and side are also selected to accentuate the oversized scale of the piece. The pulls and escutcheons are cast, pierced & chased and large creating a nice play of light thru them. All but two are original and the replacements are cast and made to match showing a degree of care and respect for the original piece.
