Late 18th Century French Louis XVI Period Marquetry Rosewood Commode, Chest
About the Item
Found in the region of Normandy, France, this rare smaller scale late eighteenth century Louis XVI period sauteuse chest features a geometric marquetry facade of rosewood, lemon wood, sycamore and palisander on three sides, and is crowned with a black marble top with grey veining. A marquetry gallery forms the top portion of the piece where the top drawer is concealed. Below is an additional drawer of dovetail construction that continues with a field of rosewood surrounded by intricately inlaid borders. The drawers are fitted with classic Louis XVI bronze drop ring drawer pulls and are flanked by marquetry corners detailed with fields of inset rosewood creating a striated pattern. The cabinet rests on tapered square legs finished with bronze sabots. An exquisite example of eighteenth century French craftsmanship, this fine commode of an unusual size is ideal for small-scale living or as a nightstand, circa 1780. Includes one key with functioning lock.
