Miniature English George III Antique Mahogany Document Box Chest of Drawers

About the Item

MINIATURE GEORGE III MAHOGANY TABLETOP DOCUMENT BOX England, circa 1785 Item # 011BMA19P An austere and rather interesting George III tabletop document box, the purity of structure, early oxidized surface and total lack of embellishment are most magnetic features. The open dovetail structure locks the dense mahogany primary woods of the case together. Two rows of two drawers are situated over a single large drawer, each with original bail pull hardware to match the handles on the sides of the case. The drawer construction is typical of the period with pine secondary woods carefully dovetailed at the joints and the drawer bottoms running perpendicular to the drawer face. The chest rests over untouched original bracket feet with original corner blocking. It retains an old tag from Sumpter Priddy III, Inc. where it was acquired in Alexandria, Virginia with some descriptive notes and original asking price of $ 3400. Measurements: 13 1/8" H x 11 1/4" D x 26" W Condition report: Old and partially original finish; surface wear as expected, including some scratches to the upper left drawer face and an old ring on the top where something sat at one point (this has mostly disappeared into the surface patina). Upper right drawer with a lip loss at the corner. Original brasses. Original feet and blocking. Entirely pure structure - some pine strips applied to interior of two drawers and along vertical drawer divider to seal gaps. GEORGE III MAHOGANY DIMINUTIVE SECRETARY WITH BOOKCASE England, circa 1780 Item # 307PZN13W A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting. The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side. The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout. The drawers are hung with period Georgian brasses...
