About the Item

A stunning and extremely high quality pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Belle Époque period mahogany, tulipwood, charmwood, ormolu and white Carrara marble commodes, attributed to Henry Dasson. Each two drawer chest is raised by impressive square tapered legs with fine fitted ormolu square mottled sabots with fine inlaid tulipwood fillets and mottled acanthus leaf top caps. The bottom drawers display most decorative rounded friezes centered by elegant rosettes and richly chased tied berried laurel branches in a striking satin and burnished finish. A beautiful and wonderfully executed marquetry à la Reine design with finely detailed flowers and interlocking patterns extends over both drawers which are 'sans traverse' (without crossbar) showcasing the cabinet makers' high level of skill. Each drawer displays superb berried laurel wreath and rosette designed ormolu pulls and tied berried laurel keyhole escutcheons with fine mottled and beaded wrap around ormolu bands at the border. Each corner displays sensational intricately detailed swaging floral ormolu mounts also in a beautiful satin and burnished finish. Each side also displays striking marquetry à la Reine designs also framed within fine mottled and beaded wrap around ormolu bands. Above are the original white Carrara marble tops with fine mottled borders. All original gilt throughout. Henry Dasson (1825–1896) was a renowned 19th century Parisian maker of gilt-bronze mounted furniture. Dasson specialized in the production of Louis XIV, XV and XVI styles, using the finest gilt-bronze mounts and was recognized as a brilliant bronzier. ?Dasson was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1883 and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle.
