A Sheraton mirror back bureau, likely Nathaniel Appleton, Salem.
About the Item
The bureau has a rectangular looking glass with cross-banded half round moldings surrounding an original mirror glass. The mirror is supported between two scrolled uprights that are carved and gilt painted to resemble classical lyres. The uprights are set with brass ball form finials and brass thumb-screws that allow the mirror to tilt. The mirror rests above a stepped-back bank of three short drawers. Each of the drawers have lion mask pulls and richly grained mahogany panels with cock-bead surrounds. The drawers are flanked by turreted columns with molded disk tops and detailed sheaf of wheat carvings on a star punched background. The mirror section is secured to the chest top, which has figured mahogany veneer and a cross-banded half round molding.
The chest of drawers consist of two short drawers over two long drawers, similar to the top section, with mahogany panels and cock-bead surrounds, but with larger matching lion mask pulls. The chest has ovolo corners with molded disk caps above turreted legs with richly carved acanthus leaf tops on star-punch backgrounds.
The legs have bold reed carvings interrupted with stacked ring and urn turnings, tapering to a ring-form cuff. The knee of the leg has a series of three rings that conform to the bead molding that runs across the apron of the chest. The rear legs are smooth with ring turnings and join the base of the chest.
