Unusual 18th Century Louis XV Period Walnut Wood Commode from Arles, France

About the Item

Featuring Rococo elements from the period of Louis XV, this walnut commode was hand-carved in Arles, France, during the 18th century. The chest of drawers is quite unusual in that it is only 36 inches wide, and the facades have subtle curves, whereas most Louis XV furniture with a bombé front and galbé sides typically have more severe slopes. The top has been carved with a recessed quarter round edge and a chamfered bottom. Both sides have asymmetrical panels with raised molding and a shaped molding beneath. All four legs are cabriole with volute scrolled feet. The front legs are adorned with a large foliate roquillard near the feet, matching the elaborate curled leaves and scrolls of the pierced front apron. Just above the highly shaped apron are two tiers of Rococo style drawers (Rococo was replaced by Neoclassicism in the late 1750’s, putting the production of the commode before 1750, but after 1725). Both drawers have been embellished with the same carvings: a beautiful cartouche of attenuated leaves, scrolls, and curled leaves. A pair of concentric circle pulls flank each side of the cartouche, set inside sinuous cavetto molding. A beautiful example of Louis XV furniture, our diminutive walnut wood commode from Arles is perfect for any room that needs storage and where space is limited. It would also make a stunning bedside table.

  • 18th Century Walnut Wood Crossbow Commode from Provence, France
    Located in Dallas, TX
In French, arbalete means “crossbow” and is typically used to describe the shape of furniture when the frontage has been carved in a sinuous manner. When the profile is viewed from above, it resembles the European Medieval crossbow. In the case of this walnut commode from Provence, the form is double arbalete. Two iron swag handles are affixed to each of the three stacked drawers by parted shell mounts. In between the pulls is a sinuous plate that surrounds a keyhole. Each drawer maintains the arbalete structure created by the thinly molded top. The apron is highly shaped, with many small arbaletes strung together. In the center is a gadrooned leaf and floret medallion surrounded by volute scrolls. The sides are straight but consist of recessed rectangular panels with asymmetrical tops...

  • Louis XIV Cherrywood Commode from France, Early 18th Century
    Located in Dallas, TX
The straight grain and rich color of the cherry tree made it a desirable wood for constructing luxury furniture during the 18th century. One beautiful example is our period Louis XIV commode, which was hand-carved in France in the early 1700’s. Augmenting the lovely reddish-brown color of the commode is an arbalete top that slightly hangs over the three stacked drawers below. Each drawer has three bronze foliate fittings set inside geometric panels with recessed molding (two pierced foliate swag pulls flanking a small keyplate surrounded by a parted leaf). There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables. Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...
