18th century commode in rosewood veneer stamped Jean-Baptiste VASSOU Beautiful chest of drawers / commode in rosewood veneer and green tinted wood fillets in checkerboard framing. 18th century furniture, Louis XVI period and style. Stamp of the cabinetmaker Jean Baptiste VASSOU, received master in 1767. Dimensions (Height/Width/Depth) : 86 x 110 x 52 cm Artist exhibited in Paris at the Petit Palais, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Cognacq-Jay Museum. Shape: Straight mounted on 4 tapered legs, rounded uprights inlaid with simulated flutes. Openings: 3 rows of drawers - 3 small drawers in the first row under the marble top and 2 long drawers. Ornamentation: Round drawer rings and medallion keyholes topped by a pleated ribbon bow with falling garlands on the sides. Ringed and curved hooves. Marble: Grey marble veined with white marble Sainte Anne type Marquetry: Furniture with rounded amounts inlaid with simulated flutes. Rosewood veneer and green tinted wood fillets in frames of checkerboard fillets. >> Stamp Jean-Baptiste VASSOU (1767) Jean-Baptiste VASSOU was born in 1739 and began his career in Paris, at the sign of "La Tête Noire" located on rue Saint Nicolas. He obtained his master's degree as a cabinetmaker on January 28, 1767. His production, rather abundant, gathers essentially mahogany furniture of Transition style, recognizable because often very high in proportion to their width. He favored satinwood or rosewood veneers and his marquetry was generally light and floral. In 1799, he transferred his workshop to rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine where his youngest son Jean-Louis succeeded him.
