About the Item

Commode stamped Charles Chevallier Period XVIIIth Elegant commode decorated with beautiful ornaments of chased and openworked gilt bronze. 18th Century furniture, Louis XV period and style. Stamped by Charles Chevallier, master cabinetmaker in 1738. Dimensions (Height/Width/Depth): 82x 134 x 62 cm Note: Two visible stamps (see photos). Artist exhibited at the Carnavalet Museum, in Paris, France. Shape: Commode with a slightly curved front Openings: 4 drawers with visible crosspieces : 2 small drawers under the marble top and two long drawers. (key provided) Ornamentation: Beautiful ormolu ornaments chiseled and openwork : locks with tormented volutes and handles with floral motifs. Marble: Veined marble top, surrounded on 3 sides by a spout Marquetry: Beautiful work of contrast of dark and light woods forming rectangular reserves, and herringbone patterns on the cheeks of the furniture. >> Charles CHEVALLIER (1738) Charles CHEVALLIER comes from a family of master cabinetmakers and is the son-in-law of the cabinetmaker Gaspard Coulonaussi. Charles is also called "Le Jeune" to distinguish him from his brother, also a cabinetmaker: Jean Mathieu Chevallier called "L'ainé". Charles CHEVALLIER received his master's degree in cabinet making in 1738 and set up his workshop in Paris, rue du Bac. His production is essentially Transitional and Louis XV style furniture whose high quality of manufacture will allow him to gain a great notoriety. He was cited in 1769 in the "Almanach d'Indication ou..... du Vrai mérite" as one of the leading cabinetmakers of his time. Although he was a well-known cabinetmaker in his time, it is believed that Charles Chevallier's works were not very numerous. Probably less than those of his brother, Jean-Mathieu, known as the Elder, also a cabinetmaker (1743), who was installed on the rue de Grenelle and known for his large pieces of furniture richly decorated in the Rocaille style. At his death, his colleague, the prestigious Antoine-Mathieu Criaerd, took over his workshop in the rue du Bac.
