About the Item

Commode/chest of drawers stamped Pierre ROUSSEL (1723-1782) in rosewood, amaranth and tobacco wood The superb marquetry of rosewood, amaranth and tobacco wood represents floral and musical decor. Under the marble we can find both stamps : from the cabinetmaker and from the corporation. Stamped by Pierre ROUSSEL, received master cabinetmaker in 1745. Stamp of control "JME", Corporation of cabinetmakers / Jurande des maîtres Menuisiers Ebénistes. Furniture of the 18th century, Transition style (between Louis XV and Louis XVI style) Dimensions (Height/width/depth): 89.5 x 130 x 60 cm Artist exhibited in France (Paris: Louvre Museum, Petit Palais, Museum of Decorative Arts; Lyon: Museum of Decorative Arts, ...) and internationally (Boston-Museum of Fine Arts; Cleveland-Museum of Arts). Shape: Straight with a slightly protruding front and arched feet. Openings: 3 rows of 5 drawers with concealed crossbars - 3 small drawers in the first row, under the marble top, then 2 drawers along the length. Ornamentation: On the front: corner scrolls representing foliage and lion paw feet. Cul-de-lampe with a cassolette motif. On the drawers: Keyhole on each drawer (original key provided). In the central part, medallion and foliage wreath keyways, lion's head on the top drawer, pull rings on the sides. Marble: Grey marble top surrounded by a cavet on three sides. Marquetry: Marquetry of floral bouquets and musical instruments. Veneer and marquetry of rosewood, amaranth, tobacco wood, sycamore and composite nets drawing rectangular reserves. >> Pierre ROUSSEL (1723-1782) Born in 1723, Pierre ROUSSEL is a very skilled marker who left a varied and excellent production. Cited as a master in Paris on August 21, 1745, Pierre Roussel established himself in Paris, rue de Charonne, in the district of the faubourg Saint-Antoine, under the sign "L'Image de Saint Pierre" where he quickly acquired a great reputation. Considered as one of the best cabinetmakers of his time, he was highly appreciated by his fellow master cabinetmakers. His abundant production allowed him to adapt with refinement to all the styles of the 18th century. We find on these pieces of furniture of Louis XV style, marquetries with motives of flowers, bows of ribbon or he uses sometimes lacquer and motives in the taste of the Far East, very appreciated at the time. On the furniture of the Transition and Louis XVI period, Roussel favors marquetry of architectural landscapes of cities, rivers or ports, but also marquetry with geometric motifs. He died in 1782.
