About the Item

Beautiful 18th century Rocaille curved commode/chest with Royal red marble top, with rich bronze ornaments. Piece of furniture from the XVIIIth century, of Louis XV style, also called Rocaille style. Dimensions (Height/Width/Depth) : 81 x 115 x 61,5cm. Shape : Curved. Openings : 3 rows of drawers - 2 long drawers and 2 small drawers in the first row, under the marble top. Ornamentation : On the front, Rocaille style framing rods and corner falls cover the curved uprights of the furniture. The sabots in point of drawn foliage marry the shape of the foot. On the drawers, the Rocaille style handles are fixed and take the form of ribbed acanthus leaves, contorted and asymmetrical. 5 false entries of lock come to punctuate the facade of the piece of furniture, including 3 in the first row. Marble : Morello cherry red also called Royal red (original marble) - thickness 3 cm. Marquetry : Rosewood and violet wood, surrounded by boxwood fillets in reserve of sinuous forms. >> What is the Rocaille style ? The Louis XV style is characterized by its lightness and its baroque charm, thus taking the opposite side of the Louis XIV style where the furniture evoked power and splendor. Thanks to the technical advances of the master cabinetmakers of the 18th century, the furniture took on more human dimensions. Living rooms became smaller and warmer, and more importance was attached to intimacy and comfort. The furniture is not only intended to remain against a wall, we also decorate the back of the seats, the back of the furniture. The marquetries are very worked, provided and colored. They represent bouquets, garlands of flowers or sometimes musical instruments.
