About the Item
A fine commode By Mellier and Company in the manner of André-Charles Boulle.
Of serpentine form, constructed in ebony with premier-partie inlay into tortoise shell, using designs in the manner of Jean Berain the Elder (1640-1711), and decorated with bold ormolu mounts; rising from scrolled feet either side of the swept apron, and issuing espagnolettes terminating in winged female busts, enclosing shaped ormolu shod doors, with the platform edge dressed with an ormolu egg and dart running mount. Signed by the maker,
circa 1870.
French born, Charles Mellier moved to England, worked for, and eventually took over the illustrious Anglo-French cabinet makers Monbro and Company, circa 1870. Working from Frith Street and later Margaret Street, he soon became a major force in designing and making furniture, and executing grand decorative schemes. The company furnished the great cross- Atlantic liner Mauretania and exhibited at the 1904 International Exhibition in St Louis.
André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) was received as a Maître Ébéniste in 1666, quickly becoming known as 'the most skilful artisan in Paris', and was appointed 'Ébéniste du Roi' in 1672, when he became a resident of the Louvre Palace, and was granted the especial privilege of being permitted to work in both bronze and wood. Although not the inventor of the method of inlaying the combination of ebony, tortoiseshell and brass, his ability and creative ability in the medium became at once associated with the patrynomic, 'Boulle' and many of his masterpieces, which are represented in many museums and prestigious Royal collections throughout the world.

Mellier & Co.
Mellier & Co. was founded by Charles Mellier after working for the Anglo-French firm of Georges-Alphonse Monbro from his arrival in London through 1868 when he purchased the firm from Monbro. Despite an award-winning reputation as Monbro, Charles Mellier renamed the firm C. Mellier & Co. and would go on to become one of the most distinguished cabinet-making firms in London. Mellier was renowned for his work with the most well-regarded interior designers and leading architects of his day, producing collections of furnishings and decorations for such residences as the Farmleigh House and Estate in Dublin, the Manderston, Berwickshire property of Sir James Miller and the Grosvenor Square residence of Henry Duveen in London. One of his most famous commissions was for the trans-Atlantic ocean liner, Mauritania, built-in 1907. Operating at 60 Margaret Street and Cavendish Square, Charles Mellier purchased the prestigious 26A Albemarle Street, which he used as both his showroom and residence. By the end of the 19th century, Mellier & Co was recognized as one of the finest cabinet-making firms in England. He was perhaps the most well-regarded manufacturer to exhibit in the World Fair exposition of 1904 in St. Louis, where they won multiple medals.

Constructed from amaranth with veneered tulipwood "en semelle" and dressed with a profusion of finely cast & hand-chased ormolu mounts, with a Sarrancolin marble platform, atop a breakfront frieze, set with three drawers, over a unified central panel divided in two drawers depicting a 'bois de bout' marquetry floral still life within a gilt-bronze frame, flanked by panels of quarter-cut tulipwood with ormolu handles suspended from lover's knot bows, with conforming matched panels to the concave sides. The apron is mounted with a finely cast central scroll, and the canted corners dressed with cascading ormolu foliate mounts terminating in lion's paw feet. French, circa 1910 Madame Adélaïde's commode The design for this commode was one of the earliest royal commissions awarded to Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), the master craftsman who was later appointed cabinetmaker to Louis XVI and his court in 1774. The commode, with its architectural features, extensive ormolu mounts and immaculate marquetry work, was ordered in 1776 and delivered that same year for Madame Adélaïde (1732-1800), the daughter of king Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska. The commode was later moved to château de Bellevue when it was given to her by king Louis XVI. The famous commode was later part of the Earl of Carnarvon's collection, who also bought furniture made for Napoleon. Carnarvon's wife, Lady Elmina Wombwell, was the child of Alfred de Rotschild, which may explain the post-revolutionary history of the royal commode. In 2018, the Riesener commode was bought for the nation for the sum of 3.5m€ and returned to Versailles.Category
