This early nineteenth century antique German chest has three drawers with each drawer front having a different profile as well as a different painted design. Please look closely and use our enlarge and zoom features to see that the top drawer has a raisd lip that extends the drawer front outward from the body of the chest while the middle drawer has a flush edge that fits exactly in line with the façade of the body. The lower drawer has a piece of applied moulding that is raised substantially from the chest with the drawer front being twice as deep as the top drawer. These subtle details that change the sense of movement across the front of the chest give it an intriguing appearance that is enhanced by the refreshed painted decoration that employs motifs from the ancient Classical worlds of Greece and Rome. The top of the chest has a central medallion of a two handled urn enclosed within a wreath of laurel leaves that is a reference to the crown awarded at the Olympic games. It is interesting to note how important themes from the ancient world were at the beginning of the nineteenth century as it was a method to distinguish those persons who were educated and literate. Each side of the chest also repeats the wreath motif set within a pale coloured rectangular inset surrounded by the predominantly golden yellow color used overall. The front of the chest is centred on a powerful design of a pair of lions each facing away from the centre in a pose of heightened vigilance. Lions, being the most powerful inhabitant of the animal world, have always been a symbol of royalty because of their strength and ferocious nature, attributes necessary for ruling. The accompanying geometric designs of arcs seen on the upper and lower drawer add an unexpected modern note.
