Edizioni Genesio Chest of Drawers by Alik Cavaliere

About the Item

Signed original. Wooden frame veneered in walnut-root in various colors. Cast bronze handles represent the Genesis. Designed by Alik Cavaliere in 1990. Alik Cavaliere’s pieces are indeed marvellous. He was a great artist and close friend of Zanotta, and over the years had shown himself to be a surprising designer of living space and objects. Like the Genesio chest of drawers, reinterpreted with a small walnut veneered wooden structure painted in different colors and with 13 different bronze cast handles representing Genesis; like Alicante, bedroom furniture featuring a polychrome inlay showing images of nature recurring in the visual universe of Cavaliere; like the Seicento table, whose crystal top features a screen print of concentric geometries, almost like a mandala, corresponding with its four black-painted legs, and the lower surface of gold-colored anodized aluminum lights up and highlights every profile. A triad of projects that need to be seen up close to fully appreciate this “new yet ancient beauty.” Born in Rome in 1926, Alik Cavaliere lived in Milan where he trained at the Brera Fine Arts Academy and then studied Literature at the Milan State University. He taught as professor of sculpture at the Brera Academy for 31 years. As sculptor he often broke, but not always, the rules and infringed the approved technology, for his own expression, communication and aesthetic needs in language. During his 40 years activity, he used many different materials: from the traditionally metals used in sculpture, like copper, bronze, silver to the less traditional ones: steel, cast-iron, brass, lead, imitation-gold. He then used a variety of plastics, paper, words, sound, fabrics, wood, water, artifacts and objects trouvés, porcelain, ceramics, terra-cotta, glass, mirrors and recovered materials too. In Los Angeles he worked on the “trace,” on “void,” leaving the absence of a work, in order to provoke, to stimulate one’s memory, the remembrance of something that had happened before, something that was. His first solo show, in 1951, was followed by many around the world. He died in Milan in 1998.
