Russian Neoclassical Commode with Marble Top

About the Item

Available are two Russian neoclassical style commodes, sold individually. These cabinets are an outstanding example of a select group of pieces decorated with architectural views, many of which are attributed to Nikifor Vasilyev, a St. Petersburg cabinetmaker who worked mainly for Count and Countess Sheremetyev in Kuskovo between 1770 and 1780. His masterpiece is a desk overlooking the palace of Kuskovo and the gardens which is very similar to the panels of these commodes. Rho Mobili has revived the splendour of one of the highest examples of cabinetmaking and brought this beauty back to the present day. The passion for excellence and beauty are fundamental elements in the research of the structure and materials of these commodes. The cabinets are made entirely made by hand resulting in the highest quality highest craftsmanship. Veneers are walnut finely inlaid with rosewood and other precious species. The combination of these woods in a variety of colors are enriched by the warmth of the Rosso Bilbao marble top. The two drawers have scenic views of Russian palaces with finely detailed neoclassical facades including friezes in a bold geometric pattern edged with bead motifs and reels, rounded corners feature triumphal columns, all resting on front legs ending in bronze fused sabots with tapered square inlaid rear legs. These Italian commodes are the highest quality reproductions of typical Russian neoclassicism. This type of inlaid furniture in fact enjoyed considerable popularity in Russia in the late 18th century. The master cabinetmakers used an extraordinary variety of timbers to create extraordinary polychromes, a pure expression of the inlay technique designed to embellish the structure of highly valuable furniture intended for the Czars and the most elite of the nobility.
