Italian Credenza at Sideboard height

About the Item

Italy, Florence Walnut wood Good state of preservation Former Collection Bresset     The "credenza" is a typical piece of furniture from Italy. It evolved during the 15th century from an earlier form, a table with shelves for decorative purposes, which played a role in the ceremonial settings of refined environments. Transformed into a low cabinet with two doors, it is equipped with locks and keys to protect valuable contents. Sometimes of small size, it is suitable for bedrooms or small dining rooms that became fashionable in the Quattrocento.   The Credenza presented here is a Palace Credenza. Impressive in size, sobriety is a factor of elegance, playing with the color and grain of the wood, as well as the reliefs obtained by recessing the structure of the panels. The center of the doors is adorned with a lock handle in carved bronze depicting a lion's head and a pendant forming a cherub's head.   The simplicity of the panels is complemented by a beautiful frieze of dentils located under the top, as well as a wide base molded with a frieze of reeded ovals, resting on two powerful lion claws on the front.   This beautiful model testifies to the refined taste of the peninsula, whose originality lies in its ability to show creativity while remaining relatively impervious to the influences of its neighboring countries.
