About the Item
This cupboard consist of more than 11.000 matchboxes from all over the world, stemming from personal collections that go back almost a 100 years. ‘Cherished’ is Diederik Schneemann’s latest project revolving around the concept of collecting. In search of new interesting materials to work with, Schneemann stumbled upon some old, discarded and unique collections cherished by people in the course of many years, often decades. Such hidden collections, like matchboxes, pins, postcards, smurfs or perfume bottles represent a different kind of value than expensive materials such as marble or bronze. Think love, effort, dedication, the evocation of an era, bringing up sentiments and early memories. These collections used as a raw material turned out to be a much more inspiring for him to work with. Schneemann looks for a unique quality in collected items and showcases them in anumber of entirely new design pieces, thus rendering a new reality, a new meaning.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. The cupboard is has a wooden core and has old used matchboxes that can show a bit of worn time character. All the other elements ar new without any sign of usage.

The uprights on the front are placed at 45° with a concave structure that contains two turned columns in gilded bronze; the uprights on the back are protruding and fluted with brass steel plates. Palm wood veneer, with maple reserves on the base, triage maple reserves on the sides, stained maple and Indian walnut threading, on a mahogany base; on the doors there are reserves in "vernis Martin" on a golden base, where are depicted two pairs of putti sitting on clouds, busy writing and playing the zither, while the others are painting or sculpting: they are allegorical representations of the arts. The structure is made of sessile oak wood, with mahogany veneer interiors. It is decorated with gilded bronze applications and framing, with some clear and some opaque finishing; the frames consist of a single piece, realized specifically for this cabinet. The top is in marble with a violet breach, with a bronze frame underneath it. Some frames also delimit the reserves on the sides and on the front, while phytomorphic and floral bronze decorations are applied on the under-the-top band.
